大学院に入学するには、日本語ができる必要はありますか？

あります。院生や研究生として本専攻で研究する場合、日本語能力試験（JLPT）N１相当の日本語運用能力が求められます。修士課程の入学試験は日本語で行われます。また、専攻内のほとんどの授業は日本語で行われます。

大学では、日本語を練習するためのコースを開設していますか？

外国人研究生、大学院生を対象としたコースがあります。詳しくは東京大学留学生センターホームページをご覧下さい。

外国人なのですが、日本の大学を卒業しています。この場合でも、「外国人」として出願するのでしょうか。

いいえ。その場合は日本人と同じように出願することになります。筆記試験の外国語科目に関しても、日本人と同じ扱いになります。

「外国人研究生」とは何ですか？

外国人研究生は、正規の大学院生ではなく、学位も取得できません。留学生の場合、最初の１年程度を外国人研究生として過ごし、その間に正規の大学院へ入学する準備をする、という事例がよく見られます。

外国人研究生の場合でも、日本語ができる必要はありますか？

あります。

国費の外国人研究生（大使館推薦）に応募するにはどうすればいいのでしょうか？

2005年度から文部科学省の外国人研究生選考の手続きが変わりました。国費の研究生として来日したい場合は、まず自国の日本大使館に問い合わせ、所定の申請書類を出して下さい。

各国の大使館で第一次選考が行われ、それに合格した者には大使館から「合格証明書」及び「大学受入内諾書」（未記入）が発行されますので、それに大使館に提出したものと同じ書類一式を添えて、東京大学大学院総合文化研究科留学生係に送付してください。

留学生係を経て、出願書類は専攻にまわされ、専攻で審査が行われます。審査に合格した者については、専攻から内諾書が発行されます。審査結果は留学生係を通じて本人に知らされます。従来のように指導教員予定者が内諾書を発行することは一切ありませんので、ご注意ください。

自国の大使館に提出する申請書類の内容を教えてください。

申請者の履歴及び現在の身分を示す書類、研究計画書、大学の成績証明書、日本語運用能力を証明する書類、指導教員などの推薦状（2通）です。研究計画書は日本語で書いたものを用意してください。

How can I apply for the scholarship offered by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Science to study as a foreign research student at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo?

The entire procedure for the application for the national scholarship has changed in 2005. If you wish to apply for the national scholarship, you should first contact the Japanese Embassy in your home country and submit to the Embassy the necessary documents for the application. An exam for the selection of candidates will be undertaken by the Embassy. If you pass the exam, the Embassy will issue a certificate to prove that you have passed the first stage of examination, and a letter of acceptance form. You should send the certificate and the letter of acceptance form as well as the entire set of documents you submitted to the Embassy to the International Office at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo. The International Office will pass on the documents to the relevant department in the Graduate School for further examination. If you are successfully selected, the Department will issue the letter of acceptance by filling out the form you sent. The result of the examination will be reported to you through the International Office. Please note that the letter of acceptance will not be issued by the prospective supervisor as was the case with the previous system.

What kind of documents are required for selection at the Japanese Embassy?

Details of application requirements may vary between the embassies, but the following documents will be necessary for the selection process at the Department of Language and Information Sciences: (1) documents that include the information on the applicant's academic career and his/her present status, (2) study project (must be written in Japanese), (3) academic record issued by the applicant's current university, (4) documents to prove the level of the applicant's Japanese language proficiency, (5) two references, including one from the applicant's current supervisor.

Graduate students and research students in the Department of Language and Information Sciences are required to have Japanese ability equivalent to N1 on the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). The entrance examination for the department’s M.A. program is conducted in Japanese, and almost all classes in the department are offered in Japanese only.
